African Perspectives

African Perspectives

Mondays at 4:30 p.m.
African Perspectives examines current issues in Africa and celebrates African music and culture. The series also focuses on Africans living in Georgia and the Southeast and provides information about African-related activities on the University of Georgia campus. Host Akinloye Ojo is a native of Nigeria and a Ph.D. candidate in linguistics at UGA.

AP @ 10 AFRICAN TRIVIA CONTEST
One of the activities celebrating the 10th anniversary of the African
Perspectives show is the AP @10 African Trivia contest. We hope our
listeners will participate in the contest that will run from today, Monday,
November 5 through Monday, November 26. Winners for the contest will be announced on the show on December 5, 2008. All entries for the contest must be submitted via email to akinloye@uga.edu. The first received entry with all the correct answers will be the declared winner. The winner will receive a 2-CD African music set. Two runner ups will also be selected from the next received entries with the most correct answers and they will each receive a single CD of African music.

The five questions for the AP @ 10 trivia contest are the following:

1. Name the French colony that gained independence in 1960 and changed its name to Benin Republic in 1976.

2. In 1984, the late Captain Thomas Sankara changed his country's name
to Burkina Faso. What was the previous name of the country?

3. Between 1971 and 1997, what was the name by which the Democratic
Republic of Congo was known?

4. What country, formerly known as Portuguese Guinea, is one of the
smallest nations on the West African coast as well as on the African
continent?

5. This African country gained its independence from the British about
50 years ago and due to the large deposits of gold was known as the Gold
Coast.

Akinloye Ojo

Akinloye Ojo, a native of Nigeria, received his BA from the Universiyy of Ibadan. He holds an  MA from Cornell and a Ph.D in Linguistics from the University of Georgia where he now teaches Yoruba and African Studies  His research interest is in socio-linguistics. His first collection of poems, In Flight was published in 2000.
