Welcome to the African
Studies Institute website at The University of Georgia
In keeping with the Strategic Plan of The University
of Georgia, that is to advance the international aspects of
teaching, research, public service and outreach missions and
to enrich the learning environment of its students, the primary
goals of the Institute embrace the enhancement of the teaching
of courses with a rich African content, initiation of new courses
and degree programs in African Studies, collaboration in research
opportunities in and about Africa, and the expansion of current
and creation of studies abroad, student and faculty exchanges,
and continuing education and outreach programs between African
institutions and the University of Georgia.
We are fully aware that we have entered a new
international system of globalization. However globalization
is not just an economic trend, it has replaced the Cold War
Era systems of international divisions. An over-reaching theme
of globalization is an integration of peoples and countries.
This amalgamation is presently focused on the free market competition
in the international market place of ideas and products. The
shape and direction that globalization will take as the future
develops is of utmost importance. Students and faculty at UGA
will be called on to participate in what globalization becomes,
and to do so, they must become involved with the African continent
and its 55 countries, 740 million people, vast resources from
minerals to music, and the special problems and opportunities
of the new era of independence. The African Studies Institute
is here to pave the way as well as to lead.
The Institute will provide a needed exposure
to UGA students, both undergraduates and graduates, to international
affairs, including languages, culture, history and political
economy to understand and participate in developing and defining
globalization in ways that promote cooperation and peaceful
coexistence. The African Studies Institute will provide benefits
to students from the humanities, social sciences, physical,
biological and agricultural sciences, as well as those from
our professional schools, such as education, law, veterinary
medicine, pharmacy, and environmental design.
Come see us, email us,
or simply visit our website periodically for news and vital
information about Africa and programs in Africa that can benefit
you and your students. We hope you will take a few minutes to
see what our Institute has to offer.
