Examinations:
Both, the Mid-Term Exam and the Final Exam consists of tasks which test all four language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing

Rules:
1. Class participation will be 0 points for those absences not accompanied by a doctor's excuse.
(Phone number and doctor's signature are required)
2. Homework or compositions submitted up to one day late will be assessed 0.5 points.
No credit will be given to homework or compositions submitted more than one day late.
3. No make-up tests or quizes will be given to these students with unexcused absences.
4. Those who do not purchase the cassette tape for JFY must go to the language lab and practice there for an hour per week. The "F" will be given to those students who miss 3 weeks or more of practice in the Language Lab.

Requirements for Project and Presentation:
1. (Group I): One hour of video (1 or 2 sessions at library media center, 7F) per week.
2. (Group II): One hour of computer lab (1 or 2 sessions) per week.

GROUP I:
There will be a videotape of a series of episodes, called "Yan-san and the Japanese People" up in the Media Center (7F) at the library. Although the first 13 episodes are quite basic, they include many cultural points and scenes of Japan that are valuable and may be of interest to you. The episodes are short (e.g. 6-10 mins). Discuss them with other classmates in your group or with your tutor, who you may persuade into watching the videos with you. Tentative schedule: about 3 episodes per week.

GROUP II:
Your goal for this quarter is to make use of the computer lab by
1)reviewing the Kanji in Kanji Masters 3-7 (--the most important Drill is the Dictation Drill!), 2)reviewing/learning compound words that are made of these Kanji, and
3)learning more about Radicals and Kanji characters that include these Radicals. If youşve never worked with compound words or radicals on the computer and need help on using it effectively, let me know and weşll work out a computer tutorial session.

BOTH GROUPS:
Keep track of the work you have done in the lab or your video session; it may be useful when putting together your project!

* Answers to HW sheets will be posted after class the day they are due. You may earn half credit for HW when properly done HW sheets are turned in on due dates; you may earn the other half credit when the same HW sheets are turned in after you have self-corrected them from the posted answer key. All self-corrected HW must be turned in no later than Friday of the week which it is due. No late HW will be credited.

** You may earn half credit for compositions when properly-/adequately-written compositions are turned in on due dates; you may earn the other half credit when you turn in your re-written compositions based on the suggested corrections. In order to be considered for credit, re-written compositions must be turned in within one week from the day you get them back the first time. No late compositions will be credited.

*** Project: Will be closely related to your focus this quarter. Ideas for projects:
Group I: cultural points/transcriptions/etc. from Yan-san, tape recorded conversations with your tutor about certain video episodes, etc.
Group II: creative writing, extra reading, compilation of radicals & sample kanji, etc. Project progress will be checked and/or evaluated weekly. (The idea is for you to be focusing on your weak area throughout the quarter). You will present a brief (3-5 min) explanation of your project to the class on the final week.

Writing Assignment:
You will be assigned to complete a writing task once every two weeks. The first week, you turn in a draft. The following week, you turn in the corrected and complete entry. The instructor will indicate if corrections are necessary, but s/he will not do it for you. You must consult with your instructor or conversation partners to polish your writing.

The writing tasks will be related to grammar points in the current lesson and/or topics discussed in the class. You will receive three points for a draft and another three for a finished product. If you are one day late or the entry is incomplete, half point will be subtracted.

Write as interesting and cohesive entry as possible. It is all right for you to make up a story. Try to use new vocabulary and sentence patterns. The instructor will comment on your entry, and expects you to respond to the comment; it is important that you keep communicating with your instructor in writing.
