Low-Level Tritium Measurement
Direct counting and tritium enrichment
The CAIS uses a low-level liquid scintillation counting method to measure tritium in water samples. For ultra-low-level concentrations of tritium, the CAIS has modified an existing enrichment technology, using alkaline electrolysis of water to reduce the volume of water in the sample while maintaining most of the original tritium. Tritium enrichment enables the CAIS to achieve a minimum detectable concentration (MDC) in water of less than 1Tritium Unit (TU, ~3.2 pCi/l).
