The Center for Ultrastructural Research located on the campus of the University of
Georgia in Athens, Georgia, is one of the premier electron microscope laboratories in the
southeastern United States. The Center is dedicated to providing the University of Georgia
system and the scientific community-at-large with expertise in the use and application of light and
electron optical methods to a wide variety of problems. Established in 1969 through a Center of Excellence grant from the National Science Foundation, the Center has expanded its scope and services within and outside the university system to not only serve the biological and biomedical sciences but a diversity of disciplines such as plant biology, geology, chemistry, textiles, archaeology, agriculture and nanotechnology/materials analysis.
The Center is a unique medley of state-of-the-art equipment, a highly competent technical staff and a continuing structural program. These three ingredients, plus the treatment of each client's scientific problem as being individually unique, maximizes the use of the facility in an environment fostering the use of recent technological advances to problem solving. The Center fulfills its research, teaching and service functions as mandated by the University system. The Center is directed by Dr. Paul Schroeder and Dr. John P. Shields, and supported by our Administrative Secretary, Ms. Sara Karlsson Looney.
