The Russell Symposium

The University of Georgia presents the 2006 Richard B. Russell Symposium on the topic of "Nuclear Energy Renaissance: Implications for National Security.” The symposium was held on October 17th in Athens, GA at the University's Georgia Center for Continuing Education.  Former United States Senator Sam Nunn delivered the keynote address. A follow-up panel discussion included General Eugene Habiger, the former commander of the U.S. Strategic Command; J. Barnie Beasley, CEO of Southern Nuclear Operating Co.; Admiral Frank Bowman, CEO of the Nuclear Energy Institute; and Joseph Cirincione, Senior Vice President for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress.

The Richard B. Russell Symposium, held every other year at The University of Georgia, is a series that brings experts, students and citizens together to think about global problems and the U.S. role in solving them. Past symposiums have attracted such notable participants as Paul Coverdell, Dianne Feinstein, Robert Gates, Jeanne Kirkpatrick, Sam Nunn, Brent Scowcroft, William Perry, Robert McNamara, Jessica Mathews and James Schlesinger, and have focused on "Security Challenges in the Post-Cold War Period" (1995), "U.S. Policy Toward China" (1997), "National Security in the 21st Century" (1999), "The United States., NATO and European Security in the 21st Century" (2001) and "The Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Threat to the American Homeland" (2003).
