The Society convened this morning at the usual hour and the first
roll was heard. Dr. Anthony of Augusta was proposed an honorary
member by Mr. Nesbit. Having performed their duty the Society proceeded
to the discussion of the following question:
Would Spain endeavor to bring Mexico again into subjection?
Would it be politic in the United States to assist Mexico?
Which, after a very long and animated discussion was decided in
the negative. This being the time for resolutions the following
were given notice of by Mr. Gaulging concerning the by-laws. Ist.
That laughing, talking, or whispering in the hall in time of session
and whatever noises of that description which may be heard by the
censor be considered disorder. Res. 2. That the excuses which different
members may give in to the tribunal be hereby declared to be given
in on their word of honor and if any member be discovered deceiving
the society by falsely excusing himself he shall be fined double
for that misdemeanor for which he was reported. Res. 3. That if
any member disfigure by cutting or otherwise any of the appurtenances
of the hall such as chairs which do not belong to him, the criminality

of the society in the same manner. Mr. N. Crawford then offered
the following resolutions. Whereas the debt now owing by this Society
to Dr. Tinsley is reduced to thirty or forty dollars and there is
due by the members an amount more than sufficient to free us of

be it therefore resolved, 1st. That every member of the Senior class
be required to pay all his debts to the Society both for diplomas
and – on or before the 20th of June. Resolved also that if any fail
to comply with the above resolutions they shall be deprived of the
privilege of taking a diploma signed by Mr. N. Crawford, G.L. Hillyer,
and J.C. Barron which was passed. Res. 2. that it be the duty of
the treasurer to collect – nor due by the regular members to the
society in the space of two weeks and if any member neglect to discharge
his debt, he shall be proceeded against according to law which was
also passed. Res. 3 That the 3rd article of the treaty existing
between the P. K. and the Demosthenian societies be amended so that
the distance required to be observed by the members of each society
from the hall of the other be fifteen yards which was signed by
N. M. Crawford, I. B. Trippe, and I. Cuyler, Committee of the Demosthenian
Society and L. M. Smyth, R. B. Houghton and D.S. White, committee
