Minutes of the DLS: 06/20/1829

 

Demosthenian Hall 20 June 1829

The Society convened this morning at the usual hour, the first roll was called, the minutes of the preceeding meeting read and this being the time for admitting members, Mr. Wooldridge proposed Mr. Shackelford as a regular member and Mr. Griffin, Dr. Boling as an honorary member. There being no objection made they were considered as members. The newly elected officers then took their seats. When the president, Mr. Cuyler, delivered a very appropriate address upon good order and attention to the Society’s duties and the secretary read a portion of the by-laws. The committee appointed for the purpose then introduced Mr. Dearing as an honorary member. The declaiming class having performed their duty, the Society proceeded to discuss the following question. Is a consolidation or a separation of the states most preferable, which after undergoing an animated, protracted and interesting debate was decided in the negative. The resolutions, affecting the 11 article of the constitution, were then taken up and last, Mr. Bell gave notice that on next Saturday they should bring up the following resolution. Resolved, that so much of the constitution forbidding the members to go out more than once during a meeting be so altered as to permit a member to go out twice – Signed Beall, Nsesbit and Simmons. The former officers made their reports, the treasurer’s was not received. Being no further business before the Society, the several officers and the house adjourned. The next Tribunal consist of McKinley, Robinson and Rupurt.
