Minutes of the DLS: 06/27/1829

 

Demosthenian Hall 27 June 1829

The Society convened this morning at the usual hour, the first roll was called, the minutes of the preceeding meeting read. No new members being proposed, the declaiming class performed their duty and the Society proceeded to discuss the following question.

Have belligerent powers the right to restrict the commerce of a neutral for the sake of injuring each other,

which after undergoing a short debate was decided in the negative. Then the resolution given notice of last meeting respecting members going out was considered and passed. The assistant Treasurer made his report which was received. The Society instructed the Hall Committee to investigate the Society debt due to Dr. Tinsly and recovered by Tinsly by law. The election for officers then came on and Mr. Simmons, B. Harris, Rutherford, Rupurt and Alexander were duly elected. Simmons for President, B. Harris for Secretary, Rutherford for Censor, Rupurt for Treasurer and Alexander for Librarian. Notice was given that on next meeting a proposition would be introduced to do away the declaiming system. There being no further business before the society, the several officers made their reports, the last roll was called and the House adjourned.
