Demosthenian Hall
Mar 20, 1942
The meeting of Demosthenian Literary Society was called to order
by President George O. Marshall. The roll was called and the minutes
of the previous meeting were read and approved.
Wilbur Orr, Treasurer, gave a financial report which was accepted
by the society.
George Doss, Jr, made a motion that each member who is eligible
for a Demosthenian Speaker's key be required to pay a fee of one
dollar before receiving key. The motion was carried unanimously.
Marion Broadhurst made a motion to begin meetings of the Society
at 8:30 instead of 7:30. The motion was tabled.
Mr. Doss lead a discussion concerning methods of bringing freshmen
into the society during summer quarter, and suggested that membership
test be given at second meeting of the summer quarter.
Mr. Orr brought up the question of whether freshman debate will
be held during summer quarter or during the fall quarter. The question
was left open for discussion at the next meeting.
Mr. Marshall told the society that he would get in touch with Mr.
B. Ball Battle, Phi Kappa President, and arrange some debates between
the societies for the summer quarter. He assured the society that
he would report on the debates at next meeting. He also announced
that he would appoint the adlatus at the next meeting.
Mr. Marshall, retiring historian, informed the society that he
was ready to present the history of the past year, but asked that
he be spared the task of reading the history because of its great
length.
Joe Collier moved that Mr. Marshall be required to read the history.
The motion was seconded, and after much "bickering" by
Mr. Marshall, defeated by a 7-6 vote.
The society adjourned on motion from the floor.
Respectfully submitted
Robert Joiner, Secretary
