Minutes of the DLS: July 1, 1942

Demosthenian Hall July 24, 1942.

The meeting of Demosthenian was called to order by president George O. Marshall. Minutes were read and approved with additions by H. B. Edwards, Jr. who asked that the following statement be included in last week’s minutes: "Edwards said that his entire speech in Demosthenian last week was made for benefit of Governor Talmadge and that it would get him 25,000 - 50,000 votes."
Mr. Firor asked that the word "hell" be struck out of his statement of last week.
Wilbur Orr, Treasurer, gave a financial report. He said that all of the society's bills were paid in full. Mr. Orr asked that Mr. Gus Partee be given a speaker's key as he was eligible for such. There was a motion made to that effect and it was carried unanimously.
George Doss, Chief Justice, announced the names of new members and they were sworn into the society. A list of the new members, with grades, follows: Pope Hill, Jr. 90; Julius Williams 80; Athley Jordan 95; Wimbric Walker 75; Bill Evans 85; Travis Douglas 85; George Anderson 87; Jack Fulliver 85; Floyd Turk 85; Billy Martin 90; Joe Spence 70; Dick Gnann 95.
President Marshall then congratulated the new members upon their decision to become affiliated with Demosthenian. He then called upon each of them to make a short talk to the members of the society.
Wilson Darden welcomed the new members into the society in behalf of the members of the society.
Jack Royal placed before the society a plan for an honor system for the University of Georgia and asked all Demosthenians to think about the system for the next few weeks.
David Firor spoke briefly in behalf of the plan, but added that with its good points, the plan had its disadvantages. He suggested that the various schools and colleges in the University begin the honor system individually.

Jimmy Moore made remarks favoring the honor system.

Wilbur Orr suggested that Beryl Sellers, Editor of the Red and Black, present the problem of the honor system in the columns of the Red and Black.

Mr. Sellers assured the society that he was in favor of the proposal and that he would begin work immediately to put the idea across to the students.

Jimmy Moore moved that Mr. Royall’s suggestion be tabled for discussion at the next meting. The motion was carried.

The meeting then adjourned upon motion from the floor.

Respectfully Submitted,

Robert Joiner, Secty.
