PURPOSE: To encourage and recognize excellence in premedical scholarship; to stimulate an appreciation of the importance of premedical education in the study of medicine; to promote cooperation and contacts between medical and premedical students and educators in developing an adequate program of premedical education- to bind together similarly interested students; and to use its knowledge for the benefit of health organizations, charities, and the community.

ELIGIBILITY: The student shall have completed at least three semesters or five quarters of premedical work with a general scholastic average of at least 3.0, on a 4.0 scale, and also with an average of 3.0 in the sciences and rank in the upper 35 percent of the class in general scholarship. Character, general ability, and personality must be considered carefully in the selection of members.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES: In addition to an extensive program of educational activities by the chapters, the Society sponsors a number of regional and national programs, conferences, and symposia where problems of mutual interest are discussed by educators and students for the benefit of the members and other interested students and their advisors. A Distinguished Service Award is presented to outstanding leaders in premedical education. In 1982, the first Moore Scholarships were awarded. In addition, a number of scholarships are provided annually by voluntary contributions from alumni for members entering medical or dental schools. An educational journal, The Scalpel, AED Newsletter, and Notes to Alumni are published by the Society.
