| PURPOSE: To confer distinction for high achievement in undergraduate, graduate,
and professional studies in English language and literature; to
provide cultural stimulation on college campuses; to furnish community
interest within English departments; and to encourage creative
and critical writing. ELIGIBILITY: Undergraduate students must have either a major or minor in English, must have taken at least two literature courses beyond the freshman requirements, must have a minimum of a B average in English, must rank in the highest 35 percent of the class in general scholarship (cumulative scholastic record), and must have completed three semesters or five quarters of the college course. Graduate students must have graduated with scholastic rating within the upper twenty percent of the class. MAJOR ACTIVITIES: Publication of The Rectangle, an annual literary magazine; biannual publication of The Newsletter; awarding of the annual Judson Q. Owen Award of $1,500 in creative writing; the Eleanor B. North Award of $750 in poetry, the Frederic Fadner Award of $750 in critical writing, and the Herbert L. Hughes Award of $750 in short story; the annual international convention and regional conventions; annual scholarships and fellowships of $2,000 to $2,500 each; and several Outstanding Chapter awards of $300 each.
