Klub Kuumba is the University of Georgia's first and only African American
culturally based poetry society. It allows poets of any status to read,
critique, and support poetry as a literary, cultural, and spiritual form of
expression. The organization's focus is poetry. Our goal is to develop and
encourage communication between poets within the campus community. We want
to set up and run workshops in which poets will discuss with and advise each
other on writing techniques, the craft of poetry which all allows the art to
come through. Publication workshops are also planned. We hope to increase
poets' confidence in their work through our bi-monthly open mike readings.
Valuable leadership skills are developed within the executive officers who
are in charge of organizing the readings. We would also like to bring in
professional poets to read and share their experience with aspiring poets
within the campus community.
