MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION RESOURCES SUBCOMMITTEE PURPOSE STATEMENT

The purpose of the Resources Subcommittee of the Multicultural Education Task Force is to continually work toward fulfilling the goals of the multicultural initiative through the development of projects that will assist individuals in learning about and locating multicultural resources. We are committed to increasing access to multicultural resources so that faculty, teachers, staff, and students can build a knowledge base in multiculturalism that will support their teaching, learning, service, and research. We see the use of technology as playing a critical role in accessing and processing materials and information quickly. Therefore, we have focused on utilizing a range of technologies, from traditional print and media forms to web-based technologies over the Internet to facilitate this process. Our goal is to ensure that individuals not only have access through the latest web-based technology, but also can access useful information if they prefer more traditional media.

MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION RESOURCES SUBCOMMITTEE ACTIVITIES

The Multicultural Bibliographic Education Resource Database holds bibliographic information on multicultural topics. It provides easy access to multicultural education related resources for faculty, staff, and students interested in using multicultural materials in their learning, instruction, service, and research.

The Multicultural Education Resource Center, housed in room 122 Aderhold Hall holds a growing collection of articles, books, handbooks, video tapes, bulletins, etc., allowing individuals direct access to materials.

CURRENT PROJECTS

During the 1996-97 academic school year, the Resources Subcommittee has three projects pending. First, we will purchase additional materials for the Resource Center.

We also will develop a more inclusive World Wide Web Database that encompasses the work of the entire Multicultural Education Task Force. This extended database will include information about all six subcommittees (Curriculum; Resources; Recruitment & Retention; Research; Communication; Faculty and Staff Development). When a browser opens the expanded version of the database, a main menu will appear providing a description of the task force, the mission, and a listing of each committee. By clicking on a committee name, the browser can quickly link to information about that committee (e.g. purpose of each committee, members, activities, etc.). There will also be links between committees providing hypermedia access to information.

A third project will strengthen the Resources page of the existing database to include links of information in the resource center and human resources within our College and the University. When someone finds a specific reference and wants access to it, they can link directly to information about materials in the collection. If the resource is not available in the center, information concerning faculty who have that particular piece of material will be available. This information allows for greater access and sharing of resources.
