Sub-Committee Purpose Statements

 MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM  SUBCOMMITTEE :

The purpose of this committee is to help departments and individuals identify areas within courses and programs where students need to be better prepared to work in a culturally diverse society and to support course and program revision as needed.  In the past two years, the MCTF has focused on curriculum issues related to multicultural education.  Departments have been asked to develop plans for how they will infuse multicultural education content into programs and courses.  In July 1998, the Faculty Senate adopted a plan for college implementation the University‑wide cultural diversity requirement which all undergraduate and graduate students must meet in the programs of study.  Other purposes of the sub-committee includes helping departments work on examining and revising their curricula through providing articles, disseminating results of a college‑wide survey on what other departments are doing, and by consulting.

MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION RESOURCES SUBCOMMITTEE:

The purpose of the resources sub-committee of the Multicultural Education Task Force is to continually work toward fulfilling the goals of the multicultural initiative through the development of projects that will assist individuals in learning about and locating multicultural resources. We are committed to increasing access to multicultural resources so that faculty, teachers, staff, and students can build a knowledge base in multiculturalism that will support

their teaching, learning, service, and research. We see the use of technology as playing a critical role in accessing and processing materials and information quickly. Therefore, we have focused on utilizing a range of technologies, from traditional print and media forms to web-based technologies over the Internet to facilitate this process. Our goal is to ensure that individuals not only have access through the latest web-based technology, but also can access useful information if they prefer more traditional media.

FACULTY AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT SUBCOMMITTEE:

The purpose of the multicultural education faculty and staff development sub-committee is to promote faculty, staff, and student awareness, knowledge, and communication about multicultural education.

RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION SUBCOMMITTEE:

The purpose of the sub-committee on recruitment & retention is to facilitate the implementation of specific strategies designed to augment diversity within the COE student, staff and faculty populations, thereby increasing diversity within the field of education at large.

COMMUNICATIONS SUBCOMMITTEE:

The purpose of the communications sub-committee is to communicate information relevant to multicultural issues and developments associated with the College of Education Multicultural Initiative and Task Force to:

    (a) the COE faculty, staff and students,

    (b) other UGA offices, centers and departments,

© community agencies (e.g., community     schools), and

    (d) other colleges or universities.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT SUBCOMMITTEE (Formerly the Research sub-committee):

This is a new committee that temporarily replaces the research sub-committee.  The purpose of this sub-committee is to discuss and ultimately make a  recommendation about how (if at all) our college and/or task force should proceed with assessing the effects/impact/etc. of the multicultural education initiative. The sub‑committee is referred to as 'formative' for a good reason! We have discussed on and off over the past couple of years whether to, and if so, how, we should evaluate our Initiative. There are a lot of issues to discuss ‑‑ not the least of which is actually forming the QUESTION(S) we are attempting to answer.
