Membership FAQ

What is Phi Mu Alpha?

-Our fraternity, officially known as Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, is a national social fraternity for men of music.

Who can join Phi Mu Alpha?

-To be eligible for membership in the Epsilon Lambda chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, you must be a male student at UGA who is involved in some form of music. Sinfonia is for all musicians, regardless of instrument. While many of our brothers participate in band at UGA, we have several vocalists. String players, guitarists, percussionists, etc. are also welcome. A 2.5 GPA as of January, 2009 is required for membership.

Do I have to be a music major to join?

-No. In fact, over half of the brothers are non-music majors.

Do I have to be participating in a University ensemble to join?

-No. While most do anyways, it is not required. A love of music is the main requirement.

How do I join Phi Mu Alpha?

-The first step to becoming a brother in Phi Mu Alpha is the rush process. If you are interested in membership, you are encouraged to attend as many of our rush events as possible. The next opportunity to rush Phi Mu Alpha will be in the fall of 2008. Rush events will be announced soon after school starts. After the last rush event, the chapter will vote on all prospective members. Those who receive at least 3/4 affirmative from the chapter will be offered a bid (invitation to pledge). Those who receive bids will receive more information on the pledge period, which begins in January, 2009.
