Advising
Academic Advisor: Kathy Lou
We offer a diverse group of courses from which to choose your sociology electives. Before selecting these courses, the University's registration system (OASIS) requires that the Academic Advisor clear you for registration. The Academic Advisor cannot complete this task until you have been seen and until you have met with your Faculty Contact. Advising takes place in 118 Baldwin Hall, and is required for every semester you intend to register. If you wish to take a course overload, a course of action not recommended for students with GPAs below 3.0, you will also need to see the Academic Advisor to get permission.
The first step in the advising process is to schedule an appointment with the Academic Advisor by signing the sheet posted outside 118 Baldwin. Appointment times are based upon the number of hours a student has completed toward the major, at the time of scheduling. Information about the number of hours completed is available on the last line of your most recent DAR (Degree Audit Report) printout. Make this appointment as early as you are eligible to do so if you wish to enroll in classes that require Permission of the Department. These classes often have waiting lists. Once you've signed up for an appointment, the next step is to take a schedule and OASIS book and decide which courses you will want before you come to be advised. Current syllabi for all courses are available in Baldwin 118. Then schedule a meeting with your Faculty Contact. The final step is to show up for your appointment with the Academic Advisor. If you are unable to make your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible. Students who miss scheduled appointments inconvenience everyone.
Remember that advising is a shared responsibility. You should know the degree requirements for our major or minor. Familiarize yourself with the printout you are given at your advising appointment, and make sure the information is current. The Academic Advisor is here to help you but cannot plan everything for you. Making certain that you have the classes you need to graduate is ultimately your responsibility.
Make an Appointment
Sociology majors should visit the Advising Office (118 Baldwin Hall) in the second or third week of classes to make an advising appointment. This is especially true for students who are planning to graduate in the coming year but have not yet taken the require research methods and theory courses.
When it is time to make an advising appointment, sign up sheets will be posted on the bulletin board outside the office. If you need to cancel an appointment, please contact the Advising Office at 706-542-3195.
Graduation Check
Students may make appointments at the graduation office for a graduation check as early as three terms prior to graduation. If you do make your appointment, please be sure to let the Academic Advisor know to prepare your graduation checklist so you can have the checklist with you during your appointment. If you have a minor and/or a 2nd major, you will need checklists from those departments as well. To make your appointment, call 542-1522 or follow this link.
Permission of Department (POD)
Sociology courses may require permission of the
department. These
include the required methods course [SOCI 3600 or
SOCI 3590] which is
restricted to Sociology majors exclusively. To obtain
permission to
enroll in POD classes, see the Academic
Advisor and
not the professor
teaching the class. The Academic Advisor keeps current
records about
available seating and develops waiting lists; only
she can grant you
access to POD classes.
Permission to enroll in the methods sequence is allocated
according to
need. Graduating seniors are given first priority on
a first come-first
served basis. If you are a major and have three or
fewer semesters left
before graduation, you need to plan carefully. In
particular, if you
have not yet taken the required research methods and
theory courses, you
should sign up to be advised as early as possible in
each of your
remaining semesters.
If you have been given a POD, please register for the course as soon as possible. Unused PODs will be returned to Oasis before Drop/Add without notification.
Independent Study
You may satisfy up to six (6) hours of your major requirements or three (3) hours of your minor requirement by taking sociology courses through independent study from the Division of Continuing Education. Remember that these classes must be taken with a faculty member at the University of Georgia if you wish to receive resident credit. Also note that SOCI 4610 Independent Study is cross-listed with CHFD 4610. You must sign up for SOCI 4610 in order to receive credit toward your sociology major.
Directed Readings/Supervised Research
Sociology majors may also earn credit by working individually with faculty in the department. Students register for SOCI 4900 or SOCI 4960H (Supervised Research in Sociology). To obtain credit, obtain the form Permission for Supervised Research from the Academic Advisor, request the professor's signature, which signifies that he or she has agreed to work with you on the project, and return the form for the Undergraduate Coordinator's signature. No more than six (6) hours of SOCI 4900 (or 4960H) can be used to satisfy the major requirement.
Problems Registering
Sociology classes are in high demand and we apologize if you are having trouble registering for them. However, additional seats may become available. Please check Oasis.
Courses that are listed as POD are only open to majors until Drop/Add. During Drop/Add all unused seats will be made available. Please check Oasis.
