Frequently Asked Questions by Speech Communication Majors

1.) Who is my advisor?

If you have less than 60 earned credit hours, you will need to see an advisor in the Franklin College of Arts & Sciences in New College.

If you have 60 or more earned credit hours, you will see Sarah McQuade, the Degree Program Assistant (DPA).

If in the past you have been advised by a faculty member, and would like to continue being advised by that person, you should contact them to set up advisement.  If they are no longer advising students, or you would rather be advised by the DPA, you should contact Sarah McQuade (smcquade@uga.edu).

2.) How do I sign up for an advising appointment?

If your advisor is the DPA, please sign up for an available advising appointment on the Advising Sign-Up sheet on the bulletin board next to the DPA office (room 132 Terrell Hall).

If your advisor is a faculty member (anyone other than DPA), please contact that professor to make an appointment.  DO NOT contact Sarah McQuade (DPA) to sign up for an appointment with a professor.  You will find a list of faculty and their contact information within the website.

3.) How do I get cleared to register for classes?

If your advisor is Sarah McQuade (DPA), then she will clear you during your advisement appointment.

OR

If your advisor is a faculty member, you will receive a three-page (pink, gold, and green) Advisement Form during your meeting.
Once you have completely filled out the form, you will need to turn in all 3 copies to the DPA.  If the DPA is not in her office you may request an envelope from Amanda Summerville, in the main office, and leave it with her.

The DPA will clear you to register within one to two days after turning in the forms.

If you do not completely fill out the form, you will not get cleared to register for classes!

4.) How will I know when I can register for classes?

The date and time of your registration appointment will be noted at the top of your advisement form.

5.) Can I receive credit for Speech Communication transfer courses?

Speech Communication majors may transfer in no more than 6 hours of transfer credit for SPCM courses (at the 1000 or 2000-level) taken at other institutions.

Upper division courses in the major, 3000-level and higher, must be taken at UGA for credit toward the major.  If taken at another institution, these courses can count for general elective credit only.

6.) What do I need to do to receive credit for transfer courses?

Please print off and fill out the “Transfer Credit for SPCM Course Request Form”, provide all the required information, and turn in the complete package to Sarah McQuade, Degree Program Assistant, in room 132 of Terrell Hall.

7.) Can I take independent study courses to complete major requirements?

Yes, but no more than 6 credit hours of the Speech Communication major requirements may be completed through independent study courses.

8.) Can I do an internship for academic credit?

Yes, but there are eligibility requirements that the student must meet in order to receive credit.  Please see the “Permission for Internship Credit” form on this website.
