ADVISING POLICY

The Department of Speech Communication faculty and staff will assist you with your advising needs each semester.  To facilitate this process, follow these steps:

  1. All incoming students will be advised by the Degree Program Assistant (DPA), Sarah McQuade.  If you were advised by a faculty member in the past, check with that person to see if they are still advising students.  If they are no longer advising, or you would like to be advised by the DPA, sign-up for a time on the Advising Bulletin Board to your immediate right upon entering Terrell Hall from Jackson St.

  2. It is important that you show up for the advising appointment you select.  Because the DPA is taking over all advising responsibility she will be advising close to 400 students.  If you sign-up for a time, and do not attend your appointment, you can only be advised during the make-up hours, between 8:00am – 9:00am.  Additionally, if you need to cancel an advising appointment, please be sure to do so at least 48 hours in advance.  If you do not make your appointment because of an emergency, different arrangements can be made.

  3. It is very important that you come to your advising appointment with a plan for what you would like to register for in the coming term.  Start a file for your registration materials if you have not already done so; this will facilitate keeping track of your academic advising.

EXPECTATIONS OF TRANSFER STUDENTS

Introductory courses in both interpersonal communication and public speaking are required as part of Core Area F.  These may be transferred from other institutions, as may a sophomore-level course (e.g., advanced public speaking).  The two required methodology classes must be taken at UGA.  Upper division courses in the major must also be taken at UGA for credit toward the major.  If taken at another institution, these courses can count for general elective credit.
