Alligators enjoy basking in the sun on warm days.
Juveniles also bask, but often in more protected areas of more dense vegetation.
In northern portions of the alligator's range, when extremely cold weather occurs and ponds begin to freeze, alligators exhibit "icing" behavior and will stick their snouts above water. The gator nose is then frozen in place, but it is able to breathe.

Alligators can be spotted in their habitat at night by the shine of their eyes. Researchers use this technique to help estimate the population size of alligators.
