Choctaw Social Organization

chief In additon to having an advanced political system, the Choctaw had a very complex social system as well. The entire Nation was divided into two discreet social groups, the Inhuluta and the Kashapa Okla. These two groups, which transcended District boundaries, were then further subdivided into 6-8 clans and the clans were then arranged into even smaller, local groups. Generally a Choctaw would choose a spouse from outside of one's own clan.

On a more personal scale the Choctaw were, and are, matrilinael and labor tended to be divided based on gender. Women generally made clothing, prepared food and, more significantly, provided the bulk of the food eaten by tending to the agricultural needs of the community. Men usually manufactured stone tools, built the homes, hunted, and waged war.

The spiritual life of the Choctaw was somewhat less well defined. Exceptionally elaborate death rituals were carried out, and a supreme deity, Hush-tali (who was in some way related to the sun) was recognized. Despite these two observations, the Choctaw seem to have spent little energy in spiritual pursuits and tended to pursue more social activities instead.
