Choctaw Social Organization
On a more personal scale the Choctaw were, and are, matrilinael and labor tended to be divided based on gender. Women generally made clothing, prepared food and, more significantly, provided the bulk of the food eaten by tending to the agricultural needs of the community. Men usually manufactured stone tools, built the homes, hunted, and waged war. The spiritual life of the Choctaw was somewhat less well defined. Exceptionally elaborate death rituals were carried out, and a supreme deity, Hush-tali (who was in some way related to the sun) was recognized. Despite these two observations, the Choctaw seem to have spent little energy in spiritual pursuits and tended to pursue more social activities instead. |
