RPM is available in Version 4.x of the UGA Internet Kit for Windows. After the RPM software has been installed on a Windows workstation via the Kit, at least one print queue needs to be set up. (Important Note: If you are running Windows NT, you need to disable the NT LPD print server to successfully utilize RPM.)
If printing from UGA financial information systems -- specifically Accounting and Procurement -- is desired, it is necessary for your Domain Network Liaison (DNL) to register the print queue name with the UGA Network Information Center (NIC) prior to configuring RPM. (Click here to search for your unit's DNL.) If you are a DNL, you may register the print queue's LPD server through the online Web NIC Registration System which requires a userid and password to access.
The NIC needs the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the Windows workstation, the print queue name, and a one-to-eight character IBM host nickname which must be unique. It is highly recommended that the print queue name and nickname fields be identical to eliminate potential confusion. (Note: the print queue names LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, and PRN are not allowed within RPM).
Once an appropriate print queue name has been determined, the following procedure can be used to set up the print queue (with an example name of myqueue):
Step 1 - In Windows 3.11 systems, double-click on the RPM 2.14 icon to launch the program. (In Windows 95/98/NT, click on the RPM 2.14 icon within the RPM program item after clicking on the Start button.)
Step 2 - If RPM is being launched for the first time, a Root Directory Options window will appear. Click on the OK button. Otherwise, proceed to Step 3.
Step 3 - If RPM is being launched for the first time, a Create a Queue window will appear. (Otherwise, open the Create a Queue window by clicking on the Queues menu option and select the New queue... option. Or, hold down the <Ctrl> key and press the <N> key.) Enter the queue name (in this example the name myqueue) in the New queue name: field. The Create a Queue window should look as follows:
Click on the OK button.
Step 4 - If RPM is being launched for the first time, an Edit Queues window will appear with the name of your queue highlighted. (Otherwise, open the Edit Queues window by clicking on the Queues menu option and select the Edit queues... option. Select the queue you just created in the Create a Queue window by highlighting that queue name in the Select a queue field.)
Step 5 - If you wish to print administrative data, you *must* select the radio button corresponding to the 'Pass data directly to the printer (raw)' option within the Queue types field. You must also select this option if the host sending the output has already formatted it for a specific printer language such as HP PCL or Postscript. The Edit Queues window will then look as follows:
If the host is only sending simple text output, you can leave the radio button on the Print text, allows font selection, page setup option.
Step 6 - Click on the Printer Setup button and verify that the queue is pointing to the correct local or network connected Windows printer. An example of the Printer Setup window for an HP LaserJet 5P/5MP printer on parallel port LPT1 is as follows:
Click the OK button in the Printer Setup window after verify the correct information. Then, click the OK button in the Edit Queues window to complete the setup. (Note: You may have to click the OK button in the Create a Queues window if RPM is being launched for the first time.)
