Some UGA Units wish to stop running their own email servers but don't want to give up their departmental email addresses right away. The EITS Mail Migration Service (MMS) makes this possible. The MMS provides a temporary way to forward departmental email addresses to ARCHES or other mail servers. This enables a seamless transition for users, and allows the Unit to stop supporting email services immediately.
Briefly, the service works like this: The Unit provides EITS with a list mapping each departmental address to a new address. We use that to create a table on our MMS server. Then we point the Unit MX record to our MMS server, so that all mail for the departmental domain goes to that server. When mail arrives, sendmail looks up recipients in this table, and routes the mail appropriately.
If your Unit is interested in using the MMS, please read these documents to help you understand the scope and limitations of the service. Thanks! --Workstation Support Group
