Graduate Assistantships

As a Graduate Assistant in the Department of University Housing, you will have the opportunity to develop strong personal and professional skills by gaining experience beyond what a structured classroom can provide. You will be responsible for maintaining good relationships among the residents in your hall, Housing administrators, and personnel outside the Department of University Housing. You will also be instrumental in planning and implementing programming in your community. The Department of University Housing seeks candidates with previous residence hall staff experience and/or student government leadership, counseling experience, group work or human relations training.

Qualified individuals must be enrolled in a master or doctoral program at the University of Georgia . The positions are part-time and the minimum salary for the 2008-2009 academic year is $10,134 for nine months. The half time positions are presently salaried on a pro-rated basis. Graduate Assistants also receive:

•  Tuition waiver (student fees and parking are not included)*

•  Furnished, air-conditioned on-campus apartment within an assigned residence hall (all utilities, local telephone, cable and internet service are provided)

•  On-campus meal plan through University Food Services

•  Health Insurance option (student pays for insurance plan)

*Students enrolled in professional schools (pharmacy, law, or veterinary medicine) may not be eligible for the tuition waiver.

Preference will be given to candidates who are available for an academic year (July through May) work assignment.  A limited number of summer positions are available with assignment priority given to experienced returning staff.

Please note: The above two steps must be completed in order to be considered for a position with the Department of University Housing.

Selected candidates are asked to visit campus for a day and a half interview, which will take place in February 2009. Due to the high number of applicants, we unfortunately are not able to offer all applicants an interview. If you have any questions about your application, please contact Heather Rush at (706) 542-8191 or hrush@uga.edu.

The deadline to submit your completed applications for the 2008-2009 academic year was January 3, 2008. We will begin recruiting for the 2009-2010 academic year in October 2008. Please check back at that time for complete information and instructions on the online application process.

Late applications are accepted and will be reviewed as vacancies occur once our selection process is complete. Please note that the Graduate School does not allow students to hold Graduate Assistantships if they are admitted provisionally. Notification letters are sent around the middle of March.
