A certificate
in atmospheric sciences at UGA is one that meets the educational needs of
the weather and climate enthusiast. Required undergraduate atmospheric
sciences coursework is combined with coursework in other disciplines to
develop an academic background that is fitting for a variety of employment
opportunities. Graduates may secure employment as
forecasters with the National Weather Service, as radio and television
broadcasters, with the armed forces weather service, with private weather
consulting firms and in research positions with energy and
environmental agencies in both the government and private industry.
The hallmark of the UGA program is its flexibility to meet the
needs of students. The program offers undergraduate and graduate
certificates in atmospheric sciences. Students earning the undergraduate
certificate exceed the curriculum recommended by the American
Meteorological Society and
meet the educational requirements for employment by the National Weather
Service. A certificate in
atmospheric sciences is designed to help you develop an understanding of
the atmosphere and the processes and phenomena that result in various types
of weather, the spatial and temporal patterns of weather, and the
variability of climate. The undergraduate certificate requires 21 semester
hours of atmospheric sciences or related course at the 3000/4000 level.
Supporting course work includes calculus, differential equations,
calculus-based physics, chemistry, and computer science. While any UGA
undergraduate student may be accepted into the Atmospheric Sciences
Program, it is difficult to complete the program if you are not in a
science or engineering degree program. Most students are of our students
are in the Bachelor of Science degree program, and the majority major in
Geography.
In addition, the UGA Atmospheric Sciences Program has an extensive
program of internships that allows students to gain work experience related
to their academic and career interests. The primary objective of an
internship is to enhance classroom learning and expand a student's
knowledge and skills. A student may also earn academic credit in
conjunction with the internship by completing academic assignments under
the supervision of a faculty sponsor. In the past, Atmospheric Sciences
students have obtained valuable experience as interns at a variety of
locations, including federal (e.g., NOAA, NWS) and in the private sector
(e.g., television). Furthermore, the program also encourages the
participation of students in research and field projects. Interested individuals

The graduate certificate program is open to UGA graduate students in
agricultural, biological, earth, engineering, physical, and statistical
sciences. The graduate certificate program requires 15 semester hours of
atmospheric or related sciences courses beyond the undergraduate core and 3
semester hours of advanced analytical techniques. The thesis or
dissertation must have a major atmospheric sciences component. Research
strengths of the program are in agricultural & micrometeorology,
mesometeorology, applied climatology & meteorology, atmospheric
chemistry & air quality, dynamic & physical climatology,
hydrometeorology, and statistical climatology. Interested persons should
consult the prospective
graduate student section or contact the program at
