Van Cliburn finalist performs here
Pianist Katia Skanavi performs Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. in Hodgson Hall of the Performing Arts Center. Skanavi was a finalist in the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition where, according to John Ardoin of the Dallas Morning News, “she gave fully and freely of her imagination and her pianistic prowess, producing a sumptuous performance that had grandeur, lyrical mystery and impulsiveness.”
Since then, Skanavi has appeared in recital across the United States, in addition to performances in London, Paris, Milan, Vienna and Amsterdam. She comes from Moscow, where she began her studies at the School for Gifted Children. She went on to study at the Paris Conservatory and the Moscow Conservatory, and in 1994 she entered and won the Maria Callas Competition in Greece, the homeland of her great grandfather, whereupon the Greek Consulate in Moscow gave her Greek citizenship.
The program for the recital includes Bach’s French Suite No. 2 in C minor; Schumann’s Carnaval; Mendelssohn’s Variations sérieuses, Op. 54; Tchaikovsky’s Lullaby; Three Preludes by Rachmaninoff; and the Tarantella by Liszt.
A pre-concert lecture will be given 45 minutes prior to the recital by Martha Thomas, piano faculty member in the School of Music. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Tickets for the recital are $21-$25 (half-price for students) at the box office in the Performing Arts Center (542-4400).
