Food science will dedicate activity room
The John J. Powers Student Activity Room will be dedicated Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. in the Food Science Building.
Designed to provide food science students with a space for activities and meetings, the activity room was made possible by donations from alumni, employees and friends of the UGA food science department.
While instruction is the core of any college education, interaction with peers and professors in informal settings enhances the overall educational experience for students, says Mark Harrison, a professor in the food science department. This room will provide our students with space for this purpose.
The room also will serve as permanent recognition of John J. Powers, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Food Science. As head of the department, Powers was instrumental in developing the department into an internationally recognized program.
Online program ranks among nations best
The universitys online masters degree program in adult education is ranked among the best in the country in a profile on e-learning posted on U.S. News & World Reports Web site this month.
For the second straight year, UGA was one of 46 regionally accredited colleges and universities making usnews.coms list of those offering online graduate programs in education.
The program has been very well received and the students have given very high evaluations for the courses, says Janet Truluck, coordinator of the program. Id like to stress that none of these students would be able to attend the University of Georgia if the program were not online.
Of the 20 students who began the program in fall 2001, a dozen will graduate in summer 2003 and another three in fall 2003. Five have left the program for personal reasons, such as family emergencies or ill health, and plan to re-enter the program at a later date.
The initial cohort is a diverse group of students in terms of race, gender, age and places of employment. And they are all employed full-time and have families, so they must be extremely dedicated and self-directed learners, says Truluck.
Plans are to begin a new cohort of 20 students in spring semester 2003 and a new group each fall semester after that.
U.S. News lists 152 online graduate degree programs in five disciplines: business, education, engineering, library science and public health. All programs have the stamp of approval of their regional accrediting boards, which set rigorous standards for higher education and qualify them for federal aid programs. Many have also obtained accreditation from their professional association.
