Pearl Bigfeather, assistant vice president in the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, is president of the Society of Research Administrators International.

encompass research administrators working in government, commercial, non-profit and higher education settings. Bigfeather, who came to UGA in February 1999, has been involved with SRA International since 1987.
Paul Bertsch, director of the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, has been selected to participate on a national EPA task force of experts from academia and government research labs to generate criteria for implementing the environmental remediation strategy known as monitored natural attenuation for metals and radionuclides.
Miguel Cabrera, professor of crop and soil sciences, has been named a Fellow by the American Society of Agronomy. The ASA Fellowship recognizes Cabreras achievement in research, education and public service as well as his service to the ASA.

Illinois, where he earned a doctorate in educational psychology.
Wayne Hanna, an adjunct professor with the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, received the Fred V. Grau Turfgrass Science Award from the Crop Society of America.
A research geneticist for the USDA-ARS station on the CAES Tifton campus, Hanna is part of a research team of federal and state scientists working on the breeding, genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetics and management of forage and turf grasses. The award recognizes Hannas contribution to the turfgrass industry through his development of new, commercially successful turfgrasses.
Karen Leonas, a professor of textiles, merchandising and interiors in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, received an Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit from the National Academic Advising Association. She is one of 13 faculty advisers honored with this award in the 2002 nationwide competition.

Fausto O. Sarmiento, director of the Office of International Education, is chair of the Mountain Geography Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers. The former president of the Andean Mountains Association, Sarmiento is a node of the Mountain Collaborative Program of the University of the United Nations as well as the Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment Program of Diversitas.
