Open-enrollment period under way for health insurance
By Larry B. Dendy

University employees and retirees have until Nov. 14 to make changes in their health insurance coverage for 2003.
The open enrollment period for adding, canceling or changing coverage began Oct. 14. During this period, active faculty and staff can make changes to medical and dental insurance plans, enroll for the Med-Flex and dependent-care programs, increase supplemental life insurance, apply for long-term disability coverage and enroll in supplemental retirement plans. Retirees can change their medical plan or cancel or remove members from the dental plan.
Information and enrollment forms for all the options are on the Employee Benefits Web site (www.busfin.uga.edu/benefits), or are available by contacting Employee Benefits at 542-1814.
All forms must be received at Employee Benefits by 5:30 p.m. Nov. 14, and changes become effective Jan. 1, 2003. Those who dont want to make any changes in insurance coverage should do nothing, and their coverage will continue as is.
Services provided under the indemnity, PPO and HMO health insurance plans wont change significantly for next year, but premiums will. Premiums for the indemnity plan will increase 15 percent for employee, employee+1 and family coverage, and premiums for the PPO will rise 5 percent for all three levels of coverage. However, HMO premiums will decrease--by 13.5 percent for employee, 20.6 percent for employee+1 and 1.7 percent for family.
Rates for long-term disability insurance will decrease by about 15 percent for next year. Supplemental life insurance coverage will improve as the coverage ceiling will be raised for up to five times pay, to a maximum of $1 million, while rates will decrease for most employees.
Employee Benefits is holding information sessions during the open-enrollment period to answer questions about insurance programs. The two remaining on-campus sessions will be Oct. 29, 9-11 a.m., in the Tate Center Theater, and Oct. 31, 1-3 p.m., in the Tate Student Center Reception Hall.
Here is the schedule for off-campus sessions: Nov. 4, 1-3 p.m., Evans County Extension Service office in Claxton; Nov. 5, 10 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m., Rural Development Center auditorium in Tifton; Nov. 6, 10 a.m.-noon and 2-4 p.m., Stuckey Auditorium in Griffin; Nov. 8, 8:30-10:30 a.m., Northwest Georgia Research and Education Center in Calhoun; and Nov. 8, 1:30-3:30 p.m., Mountain Research and Education Center in Blairsville. |
