Charles Knapp receives president emeritus designation
Charles Knapp
Charles B. Knapp, president of UGA from 1987 to 1997, has been named president emeritus.

Regents’ policy allows University System institutions to confer emeritus status on faculty and administrators who have at least 10 years of service at a system institution. The designation recognizes meritorious service and performance.

Knapp’s tenure was marked by an increased emphasis on teaching, sharp growth in research funding and completion of the $150 million Third Century Campaign, at the time the largest fund-raising initiative in UGA history.

Construction projects totaling more than $400 million were started during his administration, including the Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities, the Performing Arts Center, the music building, the Georgia Museum of Art and Rusk Hall.

Knapp was a founding member of the Georgia Research Alliance and helped create the HOPE Scholarship. He chaired the board of directors of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges and served on the National School-to-Work Advisory Council appointed by the U.S. secretaries of education and labor.

“As UGA’s 20th president, Chuck Knapp made significant and lasting contributions to the level of academic excellence here, and he is responsible for major enhancements to the campus,” says President Michael F. Adams. “This honorary designation is well deserved and will further strengthen his continuing relationship with UGA.”

Knapp is currently director of educational development for the CF Foundation.
