Students receive their degrees in history with specialization in the
history of science, medicine and environment (as a M.A. major field or
Ph.D. minor field) along with specialization in another area of history
(U.S. history, European history,or other). General requirements for the
M.A. degree in history include 10 three-hour courses and a reading knowledge
in a foreign language. The Ph.D. in history requires 16 three-hour courses
and a second foreign language (Americanists may pass with one language
if they take the in-department translation exam or a departmentally approved
equivalent).
