Graduate Program In Microbiology
Welcome to the web site for the Graduate Program
in Microbiology at the University of Georgia. In 2006 U.S. News
and World Report ranked the University of Georgia tied for 8th
nationally and 4th among public institutions, for graduate programs
in Microbiology. As you will discover while visiting this
site, the research interests
of the faculty and students in our program encompass a variety
of disciplines, ranging from microbial ecology to bioinformatics
to microbial pathogenesis. However, there is a connecting thread
to all the research in the Microbiology Graduate Program: the
study of a broad diversity of microorganisms from the molecular
level to the organismal and community levels in order to develop
a complete picture of the role of microbial life in our biosphere.
Faculty participating
in the Microbiology Graduate Program include the 15 faculty of
the Department of Microbiology and courtesy appointments from 7
other departments in the
Franklin College of Arts and Sciences,
the College
of Veterinary Medicine, and the College
of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Our faculty participate
in several interdepartmental and multi-institutional research
programs,
including the Biomedical
and Health Sciences Institute,
the Center
for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases, the Complex
Carbohydrate Research Center, and
the Institute of Bioinformatics.
These research programs are well funded. Research in the Department of Microbiology
is supported by several million dollars in external
funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National
Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the U.S. Department
of Agriculture, and a number of private foundations and corporations.
Our graduate students are the best you will find
anywhere! They come from many different universities and undergraduate
colleges in the U.S. and from around the world. They enjoy the atmosphere of a great college
town, Athens (ranked
the #1 college-town music scene in the world by Rolling Stone
Magazine, February 20, 2003!), while furthering their scientific
careers in a highly interactive and collaborative research environment.
Departmental and on-campus research
facilities provide the tools and training for the latest experimental
techniques such as con-focal laser microscopy, microarray and
real-time PCR assays for gene expression, two dimensional-gel
electrophoresis and mass spectrometry for protein analyses, and
molecular modeling and graphics.
The University of Georgia is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative
Action Institution and does not discriminate on the basis of race,
color, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability, or veteran
