UGA survey shows journalism grads face challenging job market

Journalism and mass communication graduates continue to have a hard time landing their first professional jobs, according to the 2002 Annual Survey of Journalism & Mass Communication Graduates released today at a meeting of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in Kansas City.

"The job market was very difficult for journalism and mass communication graduates again in 2002," said Lee B. Becker, who conducts the survey each year. "Many of the students simply could not find suitable employment despite all their efforts." The surveys are conducted in the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research, a unit of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.

Stem cell death gives clue to brain cell survival, according to study from UGA, Medical College of Georgia

A signal that triggers half the stem cells in the developing brain to commit suicide at a stage where their survival will likely do more harm than good has been identified by researchers at the Medical College of Georgia and the University of Georgia.

Identifying the factors that result in the timely, massive cell suicide is important to understanding the developmental puzzle, the researchers say of the work featured on the cover of the Aug. 4 issue of the Journal of Cell Biology. MCG’s Erhard Bieberich and UGA’s Brian G. Condie have found that the lipid ceramide and the protein PAR-4 – each already implicated for playing a role in cell death – become deadly partners inside a dividing stem cell in the developing mouse brain.

UGA ecology professor wins award to pursue work in global and infectious disease

Pejman Rohani, a University of Georgia scientist, has received a New Scholar Award in Global Infectious Disease from the Ellison Medical Foundation. Given to only 10 scientists each year, the award includes a four-year, $200,000 grant to support Rohani’s work in human health and population ecology. Rohani is an assistant professor of ecology and a member of UGA’s Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute.

The New Scholar Awards are given to biological and clinical scientists in the first three years of their research careers. Institutions are invited by the Ellison Medical Foundation to nominate candidates for the program and nominees are expected to have great promise as potential leaders of research in parasitology and infectious disease, particularly as applied to global health.
