through the century |
UGA's
Master Plan
UGA’s master plan was developed in response to
a 1996 directive from the board of regents. Master plans
for each institution in the University System of Georgia
will guide capital construction on each campus. UGA's
goal: a campus that feels like North Campus everywhere. |
The
UGA Century
Over the course of the 20th century, the University
of Georgia has transformed itself from a small liberal
arts school to a major public research university with
a growing national reputation. At the start of this
new century, we reflect on the past 100 years. |
40th
Anniversary of UGA's Desegregation
Four decades have passed since two honor students from
Atlanta crossed—and shattered forever—the
color barrier at UGA. In January 2001, key figures in
that drama returned to campus to commemorate and reflect
on those times. |
UGA Responses:
9/11
An institution as complex and diverse as the University
of Georgia naturally had people who are directly and
personally affected by a tragedy such as the terrorist
attacks in New York and Washington on Sept. 11, 2001.
This is the story of that day. |

Stice
At age 39, Steven Stice—one of UGA's Eminent Scholars—has
already made international headlines as a pioneer in
the super-hot field of animal cloning. Stice’s
research has focused on producing transgenic animals--animals
with genetically altered or manipulated cells--to produce
pharmaceutical proteins or for cell and organ transplant
therapy. |
Michael
Pierce
A University of Georgia researcher's discovery of an
enzyme implicated in cancer may lead to a revolutionary
new breed of treatments aimed at preventing the spread
of cancer. Michael Pierce, professor of biochemistry
and molecular biology, is searching for an inhibitor
of this enzyme – an injectable substance that
would bind to the enzyme and prevent or slow the migration
of cancer cells. |
Jim
Porter
A team of scientific investigators, led by James Porter,
professor of ecology and marine sciences at UGA, are
pursuing the killers of the most diverse ecosystem on
Earth: the coral that once packed Florida's reefs. |

State of the University Address
Reams and reams have been written in the past few months
about the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, our
national reaction and the aftermath, which we are all
still experiencing and will experience for years to
come. The sense of security in America will never be
the same... |

State of the University Address
The state of the University of Georgia is strong, and
it will get stronger. Today I want to speak with you
about the Strategic Plan for the University of Georgia
as we begin the 21st century. I want to tell you why
I am more enthusiastic about this plan than I have been
about any other venture in my higher education career.
I hope that when you leave here today, you, too, will
be excited, first about what this plan means for the
University, and second about the impact it will have
on this state, this country and the world... |

State of the University Address
The University of Georgia is today one of the best public
universities in this country because of a 215-year commitment
to three timeless principles: Wisdom, Justice and Moderation.
Found on the Great Seal of the State of Georgia, these
principles are so fundamental to our mission that we
have cast them in pillars of iron and erected them at
the entrance to this campus. We announce our commitment
to these ideals at The Arch: The path to a great education
begins here.... |
1999
State of the University Address
...Last year, I laid out five themes that I found to
be vital to the University of Georgia as a unified institution.
I am happy to say today that I believe we are making
progress in all of them. Later in the year, I also shared
with the senior administration 10 specifics that I wanted
to accomplish in 1998. Now is the time to evaluate how
well we have done together in meeting those themes and
goals, and, even more importantly, now is the time to
look at the future. I would like to return very briefly
to those themes and goals of 1998 and examine our response,
before looking to 1999 and beyond. ... |
1998
State of the University Address
I appreciate very much the opportunity to come before
you today to assure you, first of all, of the continuing
strength of this place and to assure you, furthermore,
that the state of the University is sound. I come also,
however, to challenge you with some new themes that
I believe should guide our development for the immediate
future. As strong as this place is today, I believe
it can be even stronger by the application of some basic
themes that are sound in any size academic institution.
